Macramé Knots (Beginner Guide)
1. Lark’s Head Knot (Starting Knot)
This knot is used to attach your cords to a dowel, ring, or stick.
Steps:
- Fold your cord in half.
- Place the folded loop over the dowel or ring.
- Pull the two loose ends through the loop.
- Tighten by pulling downward evenly.
✔️ This creates two working cords.
2. Square Knot (Most Common Knot)
This is the foundation knot used in wall hangings, plant hangers, and more.
You’ll need 4 cords:
- The two middle cords stay still (filler cords)
- The two outer cords do the knotting (working cords)
Steps:
- Bring the left working cord over the two center cords.
- Bring the right working cord over the left cord, behind the center cords, and through the loop on the left.
- Pull tight.
- Reverse sides: bring the right cord over the center cords.
- Bring the left cord over the right, behind the center cords, and through the loop.
- Pull tight.
✔️ One left + one right = one complete square knot.
3. Half Square Knot (Spiral Knot)
This creates a twisty, spiral effect.
Steps:
- Follow the first half of the square knot only.
- Repeat that same side again and again (do not reverse).
- As you continue, the cords will naturally twist into a spiral.
✔️ Same cords as the square knot—just repeat one side.
4. Overhand Knot (Finishing Knot)
Used to secure ends or add a decorative touch.
Steps:
- Gather one or more cords together.
- Make a loop.
- Pull the ends through the loop.
- Tighten gently and adjust.
✔️ Great for fringes and tassels.
Beginner Tip 💡
- Always keep your tension even.
- Practice knots loosely first, then tighten once you’re comfortable.
- Cotton cord is the easiest for beginners.
