Macramé Knots (Beginner Guide)

1. Lark’s Head Knot (Starting Knot)

This knot is used to attach your cords to a dowel, ring, or stick.

Steps:

  1. Fold your cord in half.
  2. Place the folded loop over the dowel or ring.
  3. Pull the two loose ends through the loop.
  4. Tighten by pulling downward evenly.

✔️ This creates two working cords.

2. Square Knot (Most Common Knot)

This is the foundation knot used in wall hangings, plant hangers, and more.

You’ll need 4 cords:

  • The two middle cords stay still (filler cords)
  • The two outer cords do the knotting (working cords)

Steps:

  1. Bring the left working cord over the two center cords.
  2. Bring the right working cord over the left cord, behind the center cords, and through the loop on the left.
  3. Pull tight.
  4. Reverse sides: bring the right cord over the center cords.
  5. Bring the left cord over the right, behind the center cords, and through the loop.
  6. Pull tight.

✔️ One left + one right = one complete square knot.

3. Half Square Knot (Spiral Knot)

This creates a twisty, spiral effect.

Steps:

  1. Follow the first half of the square knot only.
  2. Repeat that same side again and again (do not reverse).
  3. As you continue, the cords will naturally twist into a spiral.

✔️ Same cords as the square knot—just repeat one side.

4. Overhand Knot (Finishing Knot)

Used to secure ends or add a decorative touch.

Steps:

  1. Gather one or more cords together.
  2. Make a loop.
  3. Pull the ends through the loop.
  4. Tighten gently and adjust.

✔️ Great for fringes and tassels.

Beginner Tip 💡

  • Always keep your tension even.
  • Practice knots loosely first, then tighten once you’re comfortable.
  • Cotton cord is the easiest for beginners.
